How long have you volunteered with the Booth Centre?
I’ve volunteered at the Booth Centre for nearly 2 years now.
What do you normally do when you volunteer?
I sort of do everything, I really like to help with translating and helping with reconnections (helping people to return home or somewhere safe with family or friends). Mostly I help with advice, but no one day is the same.
What's your favourite thing about volunteering at the Booth Centre?
My favourite thing about the Booth Centre is the community that it has built. The BBQ we had the other week had people turning up we hadn’t seen in a while and they were welcomed so warmly. It’s a good vibe.
Have any of your perceptions around homelessness changed since volunteering at the Booth Centre?
Completely. It’s not just about finding accommodation, it’s about sustaining the accommodation, addressing issues around this, and taking a more holistic approach. My dissertation actually was inspired by the Booth Centre.
Any hobbies or interests that you'd like to share?
I studied language at university so love learning a new language, my next challenge is Arabic. I also really enjoy a good crime show, something cheesy - I think it inspired me to do my masters in criminology.
Do you have any advice or encouragement for anyone thinking of volunteering at the Booth Centre?
You can’t imagine how much one person can bring to a team, but if you’re there for just one day you will have connected with one person and that change their day, make them feel seen and heard. I would say think about it less as you giving something back and more you receiving so much more.
