Ann
How long have you volunteered with the Booth Centre?
I have volunteered for 4 years.
What do you normally do when you volunteer?
I help out around reception and welcome people as they arrive.
What's your favourite thing about volunteering at the Booth Centre?
I love meeting everyone and feel like I am doing something worthwhile.
Have any of your perceptions around homelessness changed since volunteering at the Booth Centre?
Absolutely - it has become clear that there are many and varied reasons for it and no-one chooses to be homeless in the first place. It is also shocking how little help is provided from statutory services in some cases.
Any hobbies or interests that you'd like to share?
I enjoy yoga and fitness classes, looking after my grandchildren, singing in a local choir (starting up again in June) and pub quizzes.
Do you have any advice or encouragement for anyone thinking of volunteering at the Booth Centre?
Do it, it is very rewarding and you will get back more than you give. One of the most important aspects for me is that everyone is treated equally and there is no hierarchy. Visitors, staff and volunteers are treated equally. You will find the CEO cleaning the loos and volunteers being trusted with responsibilities. I love it and feel very much appreciated and part of the Booth Centre family.
