Drama
We have worked with the Royal Exchange Theatre to bring the experience of drama to homeless people. We ran two projects in 2009 which involved weekly drama workshops at the Centre, backstage tours of the Royal Exchange, trips to see all the plays at the theatre and the group staging their own productions in the studio theatre at the Royal Exchange.
The drama work has had a transforming effect on the people who took part. We watched them grow in confidence, learn to work together as a group, to trust each other and to listen to each other. They learnt new skills and their communication skills greatly increased. When they performed in public their self esteem increased fantastically. Many members of the group have moved on to employment, to take up education and training courses or have entered detox, as a direct result of the boost they got from the drama workshops.
We are now working with the theatre on a three-year partnership to further develop this work.
Our weekly drama workshops at the Booth Centre, on Fridays from 10:00 to 12.30, are open to anyone who has experienced homelessness.
